Hand Tool Special Interest Group
Presenter: Ken Hall
Requirements: Intro to the Guild.
Topic for Oct 24th 2024:
Making a 36” straight edge and how to prove it is straight.
George Walker and Jim Tolpin have written several books about the simple tools that unlock the secrets of the ancient craftsman who built the wonderful things that are unearthed about mans past. One book, “Euclid’s Door” describes how to make your own set of tools for design, layout, and making of what ever you want. These tools are easily made following their instructions.
As a first step in our exploration of the concepts outlined in” Euclid’s Door”, this month’s Hand Tool SIG will show you how to build 3 straight edges of different lengths and how to guarantee that they are straight.
If you want to build your own straight edges at this session, please bring the following:
Number 7 or 8 bench plane tuned to cut very thin shavings
2 pieces of clear, vertical grain wood that is 3” wide, 3/8” thick, and 36-40” long
We will have a Show & Tell session, so bring a special hand tools you would like to show the group.
Note: The Hand Tool SIG does not meet in November or December due to conflicts with holidays.
