OPEN CARVING WORKSHOP WITH MARY MAY

  .  IDEAS ONLY

Unlike most classes where students all work on the same project, this class meets different student needs by encouraging people to work on their own personal projects.

In the weeks before class, students will discuss their projects with Mary so they can bring their project from “good idea” to “ready to carve” by the time of class. Those who need to borrow tools or who would like help creating their carving blank will get that support from class coordinators. During class, students will share what they are working on with one-another and with Mary; we will all learn from each other while Mary provides personalized assistance.

Projects can be whatever your heart desires. Maybe you have an older project you put aside because you weren't sure how to proceed...maybe you saw something on her website that you want to try...maybe you are thinking about a new technique...maybe you have an idea for a fresh new project and this is the time to get started!

If you aren't sure what to work on, Mary and your class coordinators (Heidi & Michael) are happy to help with ideas. If you want to work on a project from Mary's collection of online lessons, (including the Gothic Leaf we had originally scheduled) she will give you free access to the relevant videos before the class so you can prepare.

Prerequisites: This Workshop will provide guidance and encouragement to all carvers except beginners. We want students to understand grain and have a basic level of proficiency. Reach out to the coordinator if you are uncertain whether this fits for you. If there is a tricky technical challenge you have been itching to try, this workshop will help you get there! If you are newer on your carving path, we will inspire you and support you as you deepen your skills.

Tools Required: Students need to bring their own long-handled, mallet-ready (sharp) tools. Tools may be purchased at local suppliers (Woodcraft or Woodcrafters) or online. Some carving tools, mallets, and complete kits are available to borrow from the Guild. You will need a mallet and sharpening and stropping supplies.

The specific gouges you need will depend on the project you choose; students will work with Mary and the class coordinator to ensure they have what they need.

Pre-work: Students will connect with Mary personally before class to coordinate tools, wood, or anything else needed so she and you can be prepared. If she has samples or ideas from her shop, she will bring them.

Also before the class, we will schedule some sharpening clinics and a gathering to make carving blanks for those who want that assistance. Your class team will help folks be ready!

We encourage students to watch the video of Mary’s Feb 16th presentation to the Carving SIG and carve along with her on the 5 pointed star to ensure tools are sharp and ready for class - video link is here; carving demo starts at 29:00. Blanks for the star warmup are available to students who need them. Contact Heidi McNamee.

Cost of the session is $350 and includes lunch and some wood blanks for practice and experimentation.

Coordinator: Michael Rothman, pt.mrothman@yahoo.com
