Carving Tips and Tricks with Mary May

Instructor: Mary May

Coordinator: Heidi McNamee

Join us in the Guild Studio or Online via Zoom; The link will be created closer to the event.

Mary May is one of the most well-known classical carving instructors in the US. In addition to teaching around the country and in Europe, she runs her own online carving school from her home in South Carolina and does commissions. This will be her third visit to our Guild!

In this lecture program, Mary will present a variety of tips and techniques valuable to beginning and intermediate wood carvers. There will also be an opportunity to pose questions in writing before the event. Mary will use slides and project closeups of demos, but attendees will not be carving. Bring paper and a pencil; you will want to take notes and are invited to participate in a drawing exercise.

Topics include:

  • Choosing Materials
  • Inspiration
  • Drawing & Design
  • Work holding
  • Favorite tools
  • Sharpening & repairing tool edges
  • Clean carving: planning, execution and clean-up
  • Common mistakes and how to repair them
  • Finishing
  • Grain training exercises

COST for in-person is $50 and includes refreshments.  The cost to attend by Zoom is less because you provide your own!
