An Enhanced Zoom Experience
Our presenter for May is, appropriate to the month, Mary May, a renowned wood carver and teacher. For Mary, her journey into woodcarving began over 30 years ago, in 1991. As a college student, she visited the great buildings of Europe and was captivated by the intricate wood and stone carving she saw there. She knew she had to replicate these works of art and so began her journey of joy and passion for carving.
Even after a busy day teaching at our workshops, Mary has graciously agreed to share with us her skill, her knowledge, and her passion for
carving. At her day time session, Mary will be discussing the following topics, and these will be the basis of her evening lecture. This presentation promises to be a must attend for anyone having an interest in carving.
-
Choosing Materials (beyond Basswood, what to embrace and avoid)
-
Inspiration (What do you carve (if anything) when you have no inspired project? Do you carve just for the sake of carving? Or go through a process seeking inspiration?)
-
Drawing & Design (a drawing exercise would be great for a bit of hands on)
-
Work holding (what should beginners think about, what about benches and height)
-
Favorite tools (brands, sizes, ones to avoid, old tools)
-
Sharpening & repairing tool edges
-
Creating smooth even backgrounds in relief carving
-
Clean carving: planning, execution and clean-up
-
Common mistakes and how to repair them (do you use superglue...how, why, why not, when)
-
Finishing (seal coats, shellac, other clear coats, painting)
-
Grain training exercises - beyond the donut - worm, star, any others
We are expecting a big crowd, but Zoom is always open. We have taken steps to enhance the Zoom experience, so please tune in. As always the Zoom link is:
