Masamichi Nitani ("Masa") is a retired woodworker and carver with specialized skills and approaches he learned in Sapporo, Japan as an apprentice. He has lived in Portland since 1987, and has had a varied career. He taught several classes for us before the pandemic, and we are planning to do more.
Masa's heritage is the Ainu indigenous population of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island.
In this free evening program he will demonstrate his techniques and show examples and photos of his work. Topics will include:
- his tools, customized handles, and usage - sharpening methods - his Japanese workbench and usage - texturing - finishing - design and reading the wood - carving the Ainu bear
