Build a Saw Bench with hand tools - An introduction to hand tool woodworking

Instructor- Ken Hall

Assistant- Doug Drake



General Description:

  • ·         Introduction to layout and cutting of materials to match cut list
  • ·         Learn how to prepare stock for joinery
  • o    Use hand or panel saws to break down stock using a saw bench
  • o    How to make accurate joinery cuts with hand saws
  • o    Use of bench plane to flatten and square stock
  • o    Determination of reference faces and edges
  • o    Determination of show faces and edges
  • ·         Layout and cutting of joints with cutting gauge, joinery saws, router planes, and chisels
  • ·         Use marking gauges to cut lines for better saw cuts
  • ·         Use of cut nails in to re-enforce joinery
  • ·         Use liquid hide glue for joinery
  • ·         How to customize the saw bench for your use


One hour will be scheduled as a lunch period.  Please bring your own lunch or obtain food locally.

Students should bring their own sharp tools if they have them. If you do not, the Guild has tools for your use. Remember to bring your PPE.
