Think Finish Before You Start Your Project

Instructor: Chip Webster

This is an introductory seminar in finishing.  Students will learn why a finish is applied, a summary of several types of finishes commonly used in making furniture, and the shop environment, tools and equipment used to produce the desired finish. Safety will be addressed. Students will be exposed to the concept of “Think finish first”, the questions that should be answered before starting a project. We will learn techniques for surface preparation of stock to accept a finish, types and use of lighting to detect surface imperfections and inspect coverage and aid in color application, and the use of solvents to examine the expected color and look of a board prior to finishing as well as to detect surface imperfections. We’ll explore correcting surface preparation issues and blotching. And we'll be exposed to the concept of “finishing the finish”.

Beginners are welcome.
